INAUGURAL BILL STRAUB SR.

ADULT-JUNIOR

Amelia National Golf and Country Club

Sunday, November 1, 2020

One year ago the news of the passing of Mr. Bill Straub Sr. was sadly passed throughout the golfing community sphere of influence. Bill Straub Sr, simply put was man you wanted to know and be around. He was energetic to say the least and truly loved the game of golf. His weekly routine, even to the day he died was playing golf four or five times a week. Amazingly, he normally played 18-holes in less than three hours, but was known for hitting the two hour pace of play. Bill believed in paying it forward and he enjoyed helping others along their path in life. Bill was a HUGE believer in developing our juniors in golf and stood fast as a NFJG Foundation Partner for eight years and has vowed to continue his support with the help of his lovely wife Louise, who was on hand at our awards ceremony. Louise is also a huge supporter of our junior organization and we are thrilled to continue our partnership. Regardless, the “Bill Straub Sr. Adult-Junior" will be played annually at Amelia National or another course in Fernandina Beach in honor of Bill.  His legacy and commitment to NFJGF will live on.

A full field of 60 players was on hand for the inaugural event which tested the players in a two-person Scramble with a “Twist”. The twist was tee adjustment after you recorded birdie, eagle, par, bogey or worse on a hole. What does it do? It levels out the playing field and gives more teams an opportunity to compete. Play the tips at Amelia National and you’ll find yourselves playing a very tough hole regardless.

This year’s gross champions, the team of Alexander Lymus and Executive Director Jack Aschenbach shot the winning score of -9 under par 63. The team played the TIPS three times, the gold tees two times, the blue tees three times after starting out with four consecutive pars. So we did reach the red tees and then worked our way back to the tips. The Twist works and the scores reveal a close competition, not to mention its fun to do. Team Lymus’s round consisted of eight birdies and one eagle and a bogey on hole #8.

St. Augustine’s duo of Luke and Cary Splane took the Runner up spot in the gross division with a -8 par 64 to nip Jacksonville Beaches Teigen Kornick and teaching master guru Bob Mattiace (64) in a scorecard playoff.

On the net side of the house using the Peoria handicap system, Atlantic Beaches Sarah and Foster Harpster took the top price with a score of 60 while Jacksonville’s smiling Connor and David Hess grabbed the Runner-up spot with 62. Oranges Park’s Matthew and Mike French who had two outstanding eagles on the day finished in the third spot with 65 nipping Jacksonville’s Anaiya Nahar and Jody Clark in another scorecard playoff.

Many thanks to Head Golf Professional Mike Cooney and the Membership at Amelia National for allowing us to use the course to play a round of golf in honor of Mr. Bill Straub’s Sr. Bill is missed by all and he will always be remembered.

Next up in the Adult-Junior arena is the trip to HOWEY IN THE HILLS for a stay at Mission Inn Resort and Club.

Thanks to all you played in this great event and we’ll see you next time!
